  • American Spa Magazine Features MyEsthi App

To read the full article please click here. Excerpt Is Below With visits to physical stores and in-person esthetician appointments put on hold for the majority of the country, alternative methods are needed for individuals looking for skincare advice. Fortunately, Amber Budd Peterson, a licensed advanced practice esthetician, was ahead of the curve and launched an app called myEsthi in late 2019, which allows users to book affordable one-on-one video consultations with licensed esthetic professionals. “It’s a way to work with an esthetician without having to leave your home or be able to learn about your skin on your lunch break,” says Peterson. “We have built a proprietary platform, giving the estheticians an opportunity for a side hustle, and the clients an opportunity to learn about their skin, not what works for someone else. Some brands offer chat functions, but again, they’re salespeople, not licensed, knowledgeable professionals.” Thank you Carol for the beautiful write up!

  • Skin care basics Part 1: How to Wash Your Face

I know what you're thinking...I KNOW how to wash my face, Amber. I add water to my cleanser, wipe it around a bit, and rinse. Well, that's better than nothing, but it's not the BEST you could do. And I know, we're starting super basic here...but the basics are where great skin is made. To truly remove your makeup, the pollution and grime from the day, and any oil or bacteria on the skin, you need to wash your face for about 90 seconds. **CUE SCREECHING RECORD PLAYER** What? 90 Seconds?! Yep, you read that right. Here's the scoop: Add the amount of cleanser you need* to your fingertips Add a bit of water to give it some slip. Massage around your face in upward circles for 90 seconds. ** Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water*** Pat dry, do not scrub. **** Bonus tips: *if its a gel, it's about the size of a large pea, if its a cream, you'll need about a dime. **If you cleanser starts to dry out or feels like its soaking into your skin add a bit more water. ***NO HOT WATER on your face. Hot water strips the skin of its natural protective barriers. ****Do not use the same towel to dry your face as you use for yours and everyone else's hands in your home. Designate a facial towel, and don't use them for more than a few days between washes. #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddpeterson #esthetician #amberbuddatelier

  • Wax Pre and Post care

Waxing. The very thought sends many running for the hills. Or rocking back and forth in the corner in the fetal position. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. Waxing is a cumulative effort. The comfort level of your wax, while yes, it does depend on your technicians skill level, also depends on your pre care and prep. Here are my recommendations (and yes, I am a licensed Esthetician, and a Wax Specialist…I wouldn’t tell you these things if I didn’t stand by them for each and every client) PRE wax Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate. A combination of both chemical and manual exfoliants will yield the best results, but I’ll take whatever you’re working with. At the VERY minimum, exfoliate roughly 24 hours before your appointment. Preferably, you’d be exfoliating every day to every other day. Take an ibuprofen about an hour before your appointment, this will cut down on the sting factor a bit. Ladies, if you’re on your period, it’s most likely going to be more painful if you’re having a bikini/brazillian done. Just know that. EVERYONE: your hair should be the length of a grain of white rice. If its longer than that, the wax could get stuck. That WILL hurt more to remove, and take a lot longer. Don’t you want to be in and out as fast as possible? Get one of those beard trimmers and use it. You will be very glad you did. Repeat after me: the length of a grain of rice. If you are on a treatment such as Accutane or a Retinol, your skin is more sensitive to “lifting” or tearing. Proceed with caution. Some waxers will not work on skin if you’re using those products DURING your wax: Breathe. Ask questions if you have them. Don’t be embarrassed. Waxers are generally very comfortable with the human body in all forms. We usually want to help you experience as little pain as possible, but getting you in and out quickly, so we’re looking at your hair, which direction it grows, and working fast. Special note for brazillian/bikini: Hold still in whatever position we ask. There’s a reason for it. We don’t make you frog your legs for nothing. It’s quicker, easier, and holds most skin taught. Do not, I repeat, do not, close your knees until we say its okay. You don’t want to be stuck together. Just breathe and hold still. POST wax: wait 24 hours before exfoliating, but then continue to exfoliate every 24-48 hours Using a product like TendSkin or the Ingrown Hair Serum from European Wax Center really does work. Don’t underestimate the power of an antibacterial agent and exfoliant working together inside your pores. #waxing #skincare #amberbudd #amberbuddatelier #burnsvillemn #burnsville #sexyskincare

  • Favorites and Fails

Favorites – A few goodies for you to check out! Bioelements Quick Refiner for Eyes** – this eye treatment is MAGICAL. Yes, I realize I’m prone to exaggeration…but in this case, I’m really not. A thin layer of this and the crows feet fine lines forming on my 30+ face are diminished in ONE NIGHT. I’m not playing around…and neither is this product. theBalm Balm Dessert** – For years I’ve been looking for a bronzer that doesn’t make me look orange or fake-y. This manages to be the most beautiful tanned glow on my pale alabaster skin without the usual-suspect-orange. Grande Lash Primer** – hands down my favorite lash primer I’ve ever tried. And I’ve tried a lot. If you’ve got a lash product to sell me, I’ve probably tried it. This has the added benefit of peptide based technology to condition and strengthen your lashes to they are less likely to break during mascara removal or sleep. (because…sigh….yes…I’m a face sleeper, despite the evidence that this causes some wrinkles. I figure it is better for me to sleep than care about a wrinkle or two. Besides…that’s what product is for.) Simple Micellar Water** – awesome gentle makeup remover. This is step one in my skin care routine at night. Remove makeup with Micellar, wash face with Bioelements Moisture Positive Cleanser, add CreateFirm serum, moisturizer, and eye cream. Boom. Micellar is genius, and I seriously hope Bioelements will release one soon! (one caveat….the bottle doesn’t last very long. Just fyi.) Prenatal Vitamins** – For those of you who have known me awhile…you know my pixie haircut from last summer. LOVED it…but I miss my ponytails and braids, so I’m growing my hair out. These vitamins have definitely helped my hair grow in faster, I’m convinced. Fails – I don’t have many of these, I seem to be on a good product kick lately! Loreal Advanced Haircare Volume Filler Shampoo and Conditioner** – This doesn’t add volume at ALL to my limp fine hair. In fact, if it’s possible, it seems to weigh it down and make it flat and lifeless. One good point, my hair does feel very silky, and that’s lovely…but just…no… Do YOU have any recent favorites? Leave me a comment on FB for me to check it out! I’m the biggest product junkie out there, and always love a good recommendation! *Available at the Atelier – call, text or email me if you have questions **Available at nearly any drugstore, Target, etc… #minnesota #serums #burnsvillemn #esthetician #bioelements #skincare #burnsville #amberbudd #amberbuddatelier #sexyskincare #makeup #theBalm #GrandeLashMD #FavoritesAndFails

  • Skin Care Basics Part 3: Exfoliate Properly

So why do we exfoliate? And how much? Think of the skin you can see on your face as the shingles on a roof of a house. They’re in place to slough off water and protect. However, when those “shingles” stack up over time (because they're almost TOO good at protecting) nothing else can penetrate them. We WANT our serums and moisturizers to penetrate through the tiny tiny gaps in the the "shingles" so we have to exfoliate off the stuff that's just building up and hanging on. What I DO recommend: Seeing an esthetician for professional level exfoliation every 4-6 weeks. Using a gentle (VERY GENTLE) powder scrub with your cleanser every few days. (Amber Budd Skincare "Exfoliate // Polish" was made specifically for this purpose.) What I DO NOT recommend: a coarse scrub (ahem! rhymes with quaint lies) that creates micro-tears in the surface of the skin, potentially causing more harm than good by spreading bacteria around and causing unnecessary irritation a washcloth - not strong enough - UNLESS your skin is super sensitive. And by sensitive I mean your skin turns red or blotchy with the smallest touch to the skin - THEN I would say a washcloth is a good option for you. Maybe. Let's talk before you do that. :) #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddpeterson #Amberbudd #amberbuddskincare #amberbuddatelier #esthetician #tutorial

  • Top 5 x Sweet Betty

Amber's Note: Full disclosure - Betty is a very good friend of mine. I like to think of her as the red lipstick wearing, sassypants redhead who rescues engineers by day (she's a kickass Admin), and makes beautiful crochet things for me to buy (skull headwraps, uh...take my money!!) and by night, tries delicious recipes on her blog for me to drool over and then beg her to make me for dinner. (because I've never been able to get one of her recipes to taste as good as when she makes it. I'm kitchen challenged) She's always game for a trip to the makeup store, (Yes, I'm a makeup artist. Yes, Betty has given me suggestions for some of my all time fave products. This girl knows her stuff) to talk business, or share a glass of scotch. I suggest you follow her asap. When I decided to start the Top 5 series, Betty was the first person I thought of to get this party started. So without further ado...here are Sweet Betty's Top 5 Holy Grail Products - in her own words. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circles Eraser This is far and away my favorite concealer, drugstore or high end. I love the texture, the coverage, the finish, and the durability. In short, I love everything about it. If you dab the product on with the applicator and then blend with a Beauty Blender it creates this seamless natural coverage. It covers dark circles without the need for a color corrector first (and us pale girls know that those dark circles are stubborn). The finish is very skin like, you can barely see the product unless you are using a magnifying mirror. The durability, oh that is exceptional. I have gone 12-16 hours from application to taking my makeup off and it didn’t budge one millimeter. Once I actually took it off and was startled at how tired I looked without it on! Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray (Matte Finish) As a girl prone to oily skin I find setting sprays to be almost absolutely necessary to keeping my foundation in place in summer. I started using MiaB in college when I was active in social ballroom dance and needed my makeup to last for eight hours in a stuffy room while dancing my little feet off. Over the years I have tried some other settings sprays, high end and drug store, but I just keep coming back to this one. It doesn’t interact with my makeup, leaves no residue or tight feeling on the skin, and keeps the shine from breaking through. The only downside to it is that it takes a moment to try and you can feel the alcohol base evaporating. Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl This is my go to eyeliner for daily use. I can safely say I use it six days out of seven in one color or another. I have it in black, dark brown, and nude. It has a creamy texture, a smooth application, and lasts all day even on the waterline. I have very watery eyes so almost all other liners will bleed out of the waterline on me, but not this one. Urban Decay Naked Palette On a daily basis, I do not wear much eye shadow. Typically I only wear something to deepen the crease and a highlighting shade. When I do go for a look with more shadows, I reach for this pallet first. When I travel, this pallet goes with me every single time. My favorite shades are Sin, Buck, Half Baked, and Hustle. I love the smooth texture of the shadows (even the glitter tones), intense pigmentation, easy blendability, and long wear of these shadows. The color range is fantastic for me as well as I lean towards neutral colors with some purple tones to make my green eyes pop. For anything other than minimal application, I do use the Urban Decay eyelid primer or else I find that the darker shades can settle into my deep crease. Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighter For a long time I resisted the highlighter trend. I am a retro makeup kind of girl, I love cat eyes and red lips. That look doesn’t usually go well with an intense highlighter. Then I found Candlelight Glow. It is a soft and subtle highlight that just gives a nice glow to the skin. I completely understand why they chose the name. The mixture of the vanilla and pink toned shades enhances your blush and keeps the highlight very natural looking. It blends out easily on the cheeks so it is hard to over apply (bonus for beginners!). Amber: Alright Miss Betty, just a few more questions, because I always want to know this... If I were to peek in your handbag right now, what makeup would I find? Betty: In my purse right now - I carry a watermelon shaped makeup bag with about eight lipsticks, two lip glosses, and two lip pencils (so I don't have to pick the color before leaving). There is a variety of colors, mostly in neutral/nude and pink shades. Most of them are drugstore brands but some are luxury brands like Sigma and Urban Decay. Amber: What is your morning routine like? How long does it take? Betty: hair and makeup is done in 20-25 minutes. Some days makeup is done in 5 minutes and some days closer to 20 depending on my mood and where in the hair wash cycle I am. Basic info: Hair color - natural red Skin tone - very light (pale) with cool to neutral undertones Skin type - oily That's it everyone - Betty has spoken. Let me know if you'd like to be featured on the blog in my Top 5 Series! • Atelier Holiday Hygge 2020: Vol 1/6

This Holiday the Atelier is bringing you some cozy hygge inspired cheer! Be sure to follow our Instagram stories over the next six weeks as there will be new fun each week (and some giveaways)! @amberbudd @h.r.lashes @beauty_by_heatherlyn We decided that the first thing we need to start with is a little Christmas groove - if you’ve ever been to the Atelier you know we love music! Have you seen Ambers wall of musical instruments? Have you heard Heidi’s increasingly atypical playlists? Heather may be new to you, but you’ll feel like long time friends when she breaks out James Taylor on the record player (...*record scratch* We don’t have a record player? Amber, how come we don’t have a record player)? For those who haven’t had the opportunity to meet us yet, we are very melodic - did you know Amber is a classically trained singer? Just ask her to hit a high C sometime (do this for our entertainment at the very least)! Heidi has an instrument pictured on Ambers wall, she’ll let you figure out which one. And dear Heather has recently told us that she has respectfully decided to decline future requests to sing for the safety of all crystal and glassware in her immediate vicinity. The chandeliers and Opera Ghosts thank you, Heather. All that preamble to establish that music is exceptionally important to us; from setting a mood, to lifting one's spirits, we recommend good tunes as the answer. Today we are sharing an amalgamation of our eclectic favorite holiday songs; for real, shuffle has got nothing on us. We hope you’ll give them a listen and even send us some of your favorites too! You’ll find we are always your ride-or-die disco divas for music suggestions - giving and receiving - after all, a mixtape is the simplest way to say I love you as a holiday gift!
