What to Expect When Getting Laser Hair Removal - does it hurt?

If you’ve been considering laser hair removal, you’ve probably had this question hanging around: does it hurt? There’s also a good chance, if you had laser hair removal in the past (or knew anyone who did) you’ve heard that it hurts, so you’re a little apprehensive. I’m with you. I wasn't sure what to expect for my first session a few months ago, so I thought I’d share so you're more prepared also! First - lets address the number one question: its not 100% painless - but modern lasers are so much more comfortable. Its very manageable, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more warm than anything. A little snap here or there? Sure. But nothing painful. (and everyone else who has had laser hair removal here at the SPA has agreed!)
So what does Laser Hair Removal feel like? I’d describe it as a warming sensation on the skin, with the occasional quick snap or sting. But even that is rare. The Aerolase device we use is so quick (.650 Microseconds) that the light goes in and out of the skin before our pain or heat receptors truly kick in. The ones that snap? Those are outliers and generally, I just told myself “oooh got a good one!”
What are some things that can affect your comfort level? 1) your general skin sensitivity and pain tolerance - this one is all you, so unfortunately, I can’t tell you for sure, but given the Aerolase speed, I think you’d be very happily surprised also! 2) Area being treated - lip, bikini…those tend to be a little more prone to tenderness, but again, its so fast, you may not even notice it! 3) Hair thickness and density. Thicker, Denser, darker hair tends to absorb more light energy from the laser, so it may be a little more sensitive. 4) What session you’re on - a couple people have mentioned the first one was more “snappy” and everything after that was not snappy at all. (hey its working!) 5) Hormones. Some people experience more sensitivity in their skin the week prior to their period. Others don't. But its something to consider.
What should you expect at your first Treatment? Its pretty simple: we start with a consultation, clean the area, then laser! Most sessions are faster than people anticipate, and I’ll be checking with you throughout for comfort level. Also? We’re lasering hair, you may smell the singe of hair, that’s normal, just bear with me for those few minutes! After we’re done, I’ll apply a hydrating serum, and SPF if its a sunlight visible area, and we’ll get you scheduled for your next session. (most people need 4-6, although that can vary depending on the person)
Aftercare and Side Effects Its very normal to feel a bit warm in the treated area, and that usually settles within 24 hours. Aftercare is simple: avoid direct sun exposure, skip fragranced products for the first few days, use SPF on treated sun exposed areas, and don’t wax between sessions -we need that hair in the follicle so we can actually treat it! (You can shave, just don’t shave the day OF the appointment, give it a day or two)
Still have questions? Email or text me, and I’ll be happy to help? Better yet, book a consult and we can chat face to face!
